29-toed Cat in Kaukauna Sets World Record

Wisconsin is a global leader in cheese production, beer consumption, and Lambeau Leaps. But now, thanks to a new Kaukauna resident, we are also unmatched in toe-having cats.

Erebus Anomaly, a Black Smoke European Maine Coon, recently entered the Guinness Book of World Records for having a whopping 29 toes. The breed is known to have more toes than your average house cat, but Erebus stands alone with his bean count. He has seven on three of his paws and eight on the fourth.

He arrived in March at the breeders at BlueNorthern Maine Coons. His father had extra toes, but his mother did not. Through some strange magic, he came out unlike any other cat in recorded history.

It’s unclear whether those extra digits give Erebus Anomaly any tactical advantage in day-to-day cat life, but it seems like he could really do a number on a mouse with his 29 claws. If cartoons have taught us anything, it’s that mice routinely outwit pursuing cats, but why would any sensible mouse risk it? Move out of the neighborhood, friend. Before Erebus, ironically, turns you into a piece of Swiss cheese.
