After several weeks of checking the Drink Wisconsinbly Mailroom, it became apparent that an invitation to a gala premiere of Giannis: The Marvelous Journey was not coming.

The documentary about the ascent of Bucks star Giannis Antetokoumpo from the streets of Greece to the NBA mountaintop dropped on Prime Video last weekend. We just assumed we’d be walking the red carpet with other VIPs for some grand screening event, but there was clearly some kind of mixup at the post office.

So, since the tuxedos were already rented, we decided to make some popcorn, spike a few 64-ounce sodas, and then have our own exclusive showing in the Drink Wisconsinbly screening room.

It’s an enjoyable film. On its surface, it is about basketball, but it is really a story of courage, perseverance, loyalty and, above all, family. Seeing the challenges the Antetokoumpos faced going from Nigeria to Greece to the United States makes us want to root for Giannis even harder.

It was also fun reliving the 2021 Championship run, even if the filmmakers failed to get the Drink Wisconsinbly Pub in any of the shots of the Deer District. Watching the highlights and the crowd got us primed for another title run this spring.

To this point, the Bucks season has been a little… turbulent. And while things haven’t gone as planned, the NBA regular season is somewhat meaningless. The playoffs are what really matters. Which got us workshopping a bit of a conspiracy theory to explain what is most likely going on behind the scenes.

See, nobody says there can’t be a sequel to Giannis: The Marvelous Journey. What’s happening with the Bucks during the regular season grind is simply a device to build dramatic tension in Giannis: The Marvelous Journey 2: The Rechampionshipping. The way we see it, there’s clearly a cabal of Hollywood filmmakers pulling the strings. The things that are causing us this anxiety now will produce a more gripping follow-up film in the future.

Giannis: The Marvelous Journey is streaming now on Prime Video. The Bucks play at Fiserv Forum, right across from the DW Pub in the Deer District. And, if our theory is correct, they’ll be playing through mid-June.
