Let’s All Go to the Beer Museum!
A grown-up field trip to Potosi lets you trade butter-churning for brewery tours, beer history, and enough taproom “research” to justify staying overnight.

Field trips in elementary school were a mixed bag. For every candy factory, there were seven or eight educational destinations where the most exciting thing you could hope to see was a guy in a funny hat churning butter. But now you’re an adult, and you get to choose the off-site adventures. And, in all but the rarest instances, you don’t need a signed permission slip from your mom.
For a field trip that may actually be enjoyable, set your GPS for the National Brewery Museum in Potosi. It’s a collaboration between the Potosi Foundation and the American Breweriana Association and features an extensive collection of beer-related artifacts, including glassware, art, neon signs, advertising materials, and other promotional items.
While you’re there, you can also pop into the Potosi Brewing Company Transportation Museum, which explains the history of the brewery through the vehicles that carried their products starting in 1852 — everything from horse-drawn wagons to steamboats to railcars to delivery trucks.
Both museums are located within the historic Potosi Brewing Company. So if you really want to lean into it, you can pair your museum visits with a brewery tour. After that, join a discussion group about everything you learned in their taproom, by which we mean BS with other beer fans. They feature live music throughout the summer, so check out their calendar to see who is playing.
You can find out more about tickets and hours at the Potosi website. With all that beer appreciating, you’re going to want to find a place to stay for the night, too. The Potosi Tennyson Area Chamber of Commerce can get you started on your search. We won’t tell your mom if you decide to share a room with your crush.
